VIRREY - LA FLORIDA BIKE TOUR, A NEW PROPOSAL TO ENJOY BOGOTÁ
A new opportunity to get around and enjoy Bogotá by bike, is to participate in the 20 km urban route prepared by the Bogotá Tourism Office, and the District Institute of Recreation and Sports, IDRD, with the support of the Ministry of Mobility and the National Police.
It’s about the Virrey Park - La Florida bike tour, a wonderful space to enjoy the city outdoors, pedal hard on the bike and know the benefits offered by the unmissable route through urban Bogotá in which nature also plays an essential part.
The route, traced in the framework of the traditional Ciclovia or bike path, starts from the linear park and ecological corridor of El Virrey, on the side leading to carrera 15 and 87th Street, and continues on 94th St. to Rionegro neighborhood. Later, take 80th street to the Juan Amarillo wetland, passing by the Jenny Garzón bridge, better known as the Guadua Bridge, made of more than 3 thousand guaduas; then take the bike path which borders the neighborhoods East Bolivia and Ciudadela Colsubsidio, until you reach the Florida Park.
"With this new route we want, initially, to position Bogotá as a world bicycle destination through the different activities that are carried out by pedaling; also show tourists and residents the natural attractions the city has. From the Bogotá Tourism Office we are diversifying the offer of free routes that, as in this case, are integrated with activities such as the Ciclovía, in which every Sunday a million and a half users participate, "said Bogotá Tourism Office director, José Andrés Duarte García.
Special places for Nature lovers
One of the many attractions that this new route aims to highlight is the Juan Amarillo wetland, also known as Tibabuyes, which in the Chibcha language means "Land of farmers", a place where the Muiscas celebrated the feast of flowers, which was attended by caciques of Suba, Cota, Funza and Engativá.
It’s the largest wetland in Bogotá, with approximately 222.58 hectares, located in Suba and Engativá. It’s also the natural habitat of a wide variety of aquatic plants, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, invertebrates and 42 species of birds, both native and migratory.
Another of the most interesting nature offers, concluding the tour, it’s the Florida Park, a space of great dimension and environmental value, considered one of the most important in the west of the city.
With a total of 267 hectares, La Florida houses places for sports activities, it has a pedagogical plant nursery, different types of trees such as pátula pines, acacias, cypresses, oaks and Quindío wax palms. In the area of the lake (a wetland ecosystem), a comfortable and beautiful bird observatory was built where tourists, residents and ornithological specialists can calmly "birch".
The bike tour, offered every 15 days, starts at 8 in the morning on a round trip of approximately 40 km. Upon arrival in Florida, users will receive basic bike mechanics classes and tips to make these outings, unique and once in a lifetime experiences.
This new proposal, led by the Bogotá Tourism Office, has the guidance of professional tourist informants who tell the story and the qualities of the attractions that are on the way. Likewise, the District Institute of Recreation and Sports, IDRD, the Ministry of Mobility and the National Police, by bike, will accompany the participants.
So be prepared to go out with your family, friends and invite all those who want to know and enjoy the New Bogotá, urban and natural, on a bicycle.
