Choose the perfect saddle for your bike
A proper position of our body is one of the main aspects to consider when practicing cycling as it helps us avoid pain and possible injuries. This adjustment known in the world of cycling as “bike fit” is used in any discipline of this sport, not only by professionals but also by amateurs. Many times, a bad adjustment of the bike dimensions may lead us to abandon the will to practice this beautiful sport.
Today we will explain the importance of the saddle, one of the most essential parts of the bike, but also one of the most ignored by some cyclists who assume as normal the pain caused by a bad saddle choice. Its importance is mainly due to the fact that it is the point of equilibrium with the bike where our body mechanics are supported, affecting the comfort and efficiency of the physical activity.
When selecting a saddle consider the size, position, height and materials. This is not a standard element for any cyclist, it must be customized according to the anatomy of each user.
First aspect to consider is the size if you buy one wider or narrower your body will not rest on your bones but on your soft tissue, namely your sexual organs, skin and fat which will generate pain and discomfort. To establish the width of the saddle it is recommended to sit on a corrugated carboard sheet, mark the outline and add 2 centimeters from the center to each mark you made, so you will get the perfect size.
In addition, we recommend that the saddle has a small dent in the middle to avoid pressure on the perineum, an even more important recommendation for men, who should look up in the market for saddles with anti-prostatic. Among the various materials it is convenient to choose the ones compound by gel and covered with waterproof fabrics that don’t retain moisture.
Once you purchase the saddle you must adjust the height, for which you should consider the length of your legs. For this purpose, stand up without cycling shoes and place a book on the perineum leaving a square of 90 degrees, then measure the height from the floor to the top part of the book, there you will obtain the height of your legs, which you then multiply by 0,885 and the result will give you the perfect height. This is measured from the center of pedaling, in a straight line with the axis of the frame and the seat-post, to the highest and central point of the saddle.
Now adjust the position considering you have to align the saddle with the rest of the bike, for which you stand in the rear part and observe the imaginary line that centers it. Regarding the inclination you have to seek for it to be as horizontal as possible, balancing your weight, since the backward inclination increases pressure on the perianal zone and forward pressure overloads hands and forearms. To obtain the right one, use a ruler located in the center and along the saddle and set a level, as used by construction workers. Another good option is to use some of the smartphone apps.
Once you have defined the previous aspects, fix definitively the saddle by tightening the safety enough, and start to roll comfortably on your bike.
