Bike circuit Chingaza National Natural Park
For those who enjoy touring nature on a bike, the Bogota City Hall, through the District Tourism Institute, offers a new BiciTravesía, this time through the Chingaza Natural National Park, a unique treasure located a few kilometers from Bogotá, in the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes. So, if you love the environment, clean air and cold weather, this new route is ideal for you to experience on two wheels.
The Chingaza National Natural Park covers 76,600 hectares with unique vegetation of high Andean and sub-Andean forests, and paramos (moorlands); It is a majestic refuge of animals such as deers, the spectacled bear and the tapir, is a paradisiacal place where many rivers, lagoons and streams are born, which provide water to Bogotá and a part of the population of Meta and Cundinamarca departments.
This new BiciTravesía rides through 60 wonderful kilometers from La Calera to the Alto de la Mina de Palacio. Starting at the ruins of Siberia cement plant, the first cement industry in the country, (Cementos Samper), the plant was inaugurated in 1933 and shut down in 1998. In this place the Chingaza Paramo (moorland) starts, at Km 5th, road to La Calera.
During the tour there is a stop at Piedras Gordas, the entry checkpoint to the Park, where you may rest, recharge your energy, buy food and continue enjoying this natural treasure of Colombia.
Another sector to visit in this journey is the Alto de la Mina de Palacio, one of the main limestone production centers the city had, that then affected the ecosystem profoundly, so, the company that bought the cement plant, donated 2,400 hectares of land to the National Park, to mitigate the impact.
Our goal is to continue positioning Bogota as the world capital of mountain biking. That is why we are creating and implementing bike tours around the city and its surroundings, so that residents and tourists can get to know the innumerable and wonderful cultural and natural attractions that Bogota has to offer“ said José Duarte, General Director of the Bogota Tourism Office.
